  • Overview

    A Wiss client in the Not for Profit sector in North/Central NJ is seeking a Controller to join their team.  The ideal candidate will have previous Not for Profit experience (preferably out of an educational institution).  Heavy financial reporting experience and a strong understanding of endowments is essential for success.


     Primary Responsibilities

    • Ensure adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and comply with all Financial Accounting Standard Board (FASB) rules
    • Coordinate and manage periodic (monthly/annual) close processes and prepare timely and accurate financial reporting on a monthly/annual basis
    • Manage and have responsibility for all aspects of the general ledger
    • Coordinate and oversee the annual audit, including reviewing and preparing all schedules for auditors
    • Lead preparation for Form 990 and have responsibility for federal and state tax compliance
    • Assist Director of Finance to ensure AP, AR, treasury, reconciliations, cash application, and procurement activities are operating efficiently and effectively
    • Track disbursement of designated gifts to comply with donor intent
    • Appropriately direct donated gifts to applicable funds and reconcile gift database to banking accounts Partner with COO to manage planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes
    • Partner with COO on financing activities, e.g., debt management (evaluation and compliance) , leasing activities, cash reserve management, and long-term financial modeling
    • Partner with COO to manage Plant accounting and forecasting, e.g., maintain list of all capitalized assets, understand budget impact 10, 20, 30 years out with the long-term objective of funding depreciation
    • Assist COO with endowment fund accounting reporting
    • Intimate collaboration with Admissions, Advancement, Operations, and Program

     Key Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred
    • CPA strongly preferred
    • 5+ years of accounting or equivalent experience, preferably in independent school or non-profit space
    • Experience practicing Fund Accounting and managing net asset classification of donations and gifts
    • Keen understanding of GAAP compliance, FASB rules, IRS rules for non-profits, and an awareness of implications associated with accounting and regulatory updates on the horizon in 2019 (e.g., ASU 2016-14: Topic 958, ASU 2014-09 as amended by 2015-14, ASU 2016-18)
    • Exposure to ERP packages or complex accounting systems for revenue recognition, billing, collections, chart of accounts mapping, A/P and management reporting
    • Action-oriented and collaborative
    • Professional, courteous, empathetic, and organized approach to communications

     Desired Skills:

    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically, expert in MS Excel and functional in MS PowerPoint
    • Proficient in Blackbaud, specifically Financial Edge and Smart Tuition (or comparable accounting software)
    • Ability to identify and execute key business process improvement projects while managing all the responsibilities of the Controller position
    • Ability and desire to think strategically and differently about the independent school environment, across Admissions, Advancement, Operations, and Program
